Understanding Electric Car Calculations

Neutral, evergreen explanations of the key concepts behind every calculator.

EV Battery Capacity

Capacity is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh) — the total energy a battery can store. A larger kWh figure generally allows more range for the same efficiency.

EV Energy Consumption

Consumption describes how much energy is used per distance — Wh/km, kWh/100 km or mi/kWh. Lower Wh/km (or higher mi/kWh) means a more efficient vehicle.

Charging Power

Charging power is measured in kilowatts (kW). Higher power adds energy faster, but the vehicle and battery set the real limit at any moment.

State of Charge (SOC)

SOC is the battery level as a percentage, from 0% to 100%. Many owners charge to around 80% for daily use to help long-term battery health.

Usable vs Gross Capacity

Manufacturers often reserve part of the battery as a buffer. Gross capacity is the total; usable capacity is what you can actually access for driving.

Real-World Range

Calculated range assumes steady conditions. Speed, weather, elevation, climate control, traffic and tyres all cause real range to differ from an estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straightforward answers about how ElectricCars.autos works.

ElectricCars.autos provides browser-based electric car calculators and planning tools for range, charging, battery, cost and ownership. Everything runs locally in your browser.

Yes. All calculators are free to use.

No. There is no account, login or registration required.

No. This browser-based toolkit does not rely on external APIs, so it does not show live charging-station availability, live prices or live tariffs. You enter the relevant values yourself.

They are careful estimates. Real charging depends on the charger's capability, the vehicle's charging limits, battery temperature, the charging curve and energy losses, so actual times and costs can vary.

In simple terms, range is the usable battery capacity divided by the energy consumption. More capacity or lower consumption means more range.

Speed, weather, elevation, climate control, traffic, tyres, battery condition and driving behaviour all influence real energy use, so real-world range often differs from a calculated figure.

Yes. The comparison tools let you compare running costs and total cost of ownership against petrol or diesel cars using values you enter.

Yes. The Home Charging Calculator uses the electricity tariff you supply to estimate energy, time and cost together.

No. The battery tools provide mathematical estimates only. Accurate battery health requires manufacturer-grade diagnostics.

Yes. It supports kilometers and miles, multiple efficiency and fuel-economy units, and a flexible currency field so it works worldwide.

Calculator processing is designed to occur locally in your browser. Only preferences such as theme, units and favorites may be saved locally with no personal information.

No. The financial calculators provide mathematical estimates only and are not financial advice.

Yes, as planning estimates. We encourage you to verify vehicle specifications and local costs independently before making decisions.
